 Save energy and save money

  • Start saving money on your utility bills today with a few simple steps:

    • Use dishwashers for full loads only

    • Wash clothes in cold water

    • Take a shower; it uses half the energy of a bath

    • Vacuum the cooling coils on refrigerator and freezer and do it monthly

    • Use microwave instead of the oven, when possible

    • Turn down the thermostat six degrees

    • Search out and seal up air leaks

    • Open drapes during the day; close them at night

    • Keep heat vents clear of clutter and debris

    • Replace furnace filter every month

    • Keep fireplace damper closed when not in use

    • Set water heater temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or less

  • For additional savings:

    • Repair toilet if water is running or hot

    • Install programmable thermostat

    • Check insulation in attic, walls and floors

    • Install glass doors in fireplace to reduce heat loss

    • Have a qualified service technician inspect your heating equipment

    • Check local and state assistance programs to see if you qualify for aid

    • Buy appliances that have earned the Energy Star

    • Replace your incandescent lights with compact fluorescents

    • Check refrigerator gasket for leaks every three months

    • Install motion detectors so that lights are on only as needed
